50th birthdays are celebrated with a quiet meal or a holiday, but Vienna
Stadthalle is upping its workload, and planning a year-long publicity campaign.
In 2008, each of the 180 show days at Austria’s favourite arena will
carry its anniversary message, and the Stadthalle is increasing the number of
shows it self-promotes by 30%.
“Rather than have a
single mega event, we’ve decided that all of the shows will be under the 50th
anniversary umbrella – it’ll be on every ticket, flyer and poster,” says
general manager Peter Gruber.

The anniversary kicks off with Holiday on Ice on 9 January,
and other internally promoted shows include an Austrian version of The Full
Monty, cabaret, dance and music show Stageworld and motocross spectacular Masters
of Dirt.
Architect Roland Rainer named each of his
buildings alphabetically, with the first two sports halls simply labelled ‘A’
and ‘B’. Hall C is an ice rink and the 16,000-capacity arena is the fourth (D).
Following 1993’s banqueting hall (E), this February saw the opening of Hall F,
a smaller 2,000-capacity venue, constructed at a cost of €33m and which now
accommodates 150 shows annually.
Before preparing for its extremely visible
anniversary, the Stadthalle has forthcoming shows with Take That and Rod
Stewart later this month; Manu Chao, My Chemical Romance and Marilyn Manson in
November; and Maroon 5 and Ennio Morricone in December.
