A NEW TERM APPROACHES
For the rest of the planet the holidays are already becoming a distant memory, but ILMC members can luxuriate in the knowledge that there are still some 7 weeks to go before the start of our new three-day term. From March 10th until 12th a five-star London hotel will be transformed into
‘Professor Hardnock’s Academy for Misspent Youths’, and some of the sharpest music minds on the planet will assemble to learn whether ‘ILMC=18’ will turn out to be the winning formula that we calculate it will be.

Industry professional
sets off for another term

Diligent applicants will have already read, learnt and inwardly digested the text that was mailed to them at the end of November in the pages of IQ magazine, and have committed to memory the information contained within the accompanying Prospectus brochure in preparation for any test questions that might be asked later. But there’s no need to panic if you’ve fallen a little behind with your course work – fresh copies of the brochure and Enrolment Forms will be mailed to you in mid-February, along with news of all the latest developments in IQ. Meanwhile, almost everything that there is to learn about ‘ILMC=18’ is just a mouse-click away on the school website at www.ilmc.com.

EXAM RESULTS SO FAR

What might be of greater concern to some of our less studious members is the fact that over 200 applicants have, in fact, already filled in their test papers and passed the entrance examination to take up one of the strictly limited number of places available – and that the Mug Award (for the first ILMC mug to register) has already been scooped by star student, Manuel Serra of Fresquito Jazz, Spain. If saving a few pennies on school fees is an issue, however, you will be relieved to hear that you have until 6pm GMT on Feb 1st to hand in your enrolment form and qualify for the ludicrously over-generous ‘early bird’ discounts.

Less overwhelming than the desire to gain entry, however, has been the response to our usual request for discussion topics to fill the conference agenda – with a tiny minority having so far taken the time to complete the relevant section on their enrolment forms. This could therefore be a good time to remind all ILMC members that the annual conference is your event and the choice of subject matter is in your hands. The organisers can – and will – ensure that a packed and riveting array of topics is in place for the weekend, but there will be little point in complaining later that there is nothing in there of particular relevance to you if you have ignored the invitation to do something about it…

All suggestions for major agenda points must be with us before the end of January in order to hit the print deadlines for the February editions of both IQ magazine and e.News – so it could be time to dig out your homework books and put your thinking cap on if you haven’t done so already!

TIMETABLE UPDATES

Cramming an entire year’s curriculum into a three day term will make ‘ILMC=18’ a course suitable only to those who are genuinely prepared to ‘work hard and play hard’. Details and all updates will be published on www.ilmc.com as they happen, but here are a few crib notes on our timetable of classy events that might help with your revision.

First, a small amendment: our club swingers should note that PRG’s ‘Rider’ Cup Golf Tournament will tee off at 10.30am on Thursday – and not 11am as previously announced. Breakfast will be available at the Clubhouse from 9am. All other appetising details remain the same. Golfers and other early-birds are reminded that seriously good tuck can be had at one of the tables that we have specially reserved in the conference hotel’s Park Terrace restaurant on Thursday night.

The hotel restaurant will be offering even more exclusive dining on Friday – but the main attraction at the conference venue that evening will no doubt be found in the relocated ‘Music Room’, when Air Management – the people who brought you Jamie Cullum a few years back - return to ‘Jazz it up – again!’ at the ILMC with their latest collection of ultra-cool new acts and special surprise guests. Those who’d rather be at the heart of the action other than just watching it, however, should make sure that they book themselves in for Welldone’s Super Grand Prix Go-karting. Held at one of the largest and best-equipped indoor circuits in the world, this annual endurance race for the highly-prized Stacey Cup is possibly the most fun you can have with your clothes on – and the new team selection rules ensure that everybody has a fair shot at a place on the winners’ podium.

The jewel in the crown of the ILMC social calendar will, of course, be the ‘Sixth Form Gala Dinner and Arthur Award Prizegiving’ – held once again this year in the stylish grandeur of Claridges Ballroom on Saturday night, with the generous patronage of Nottingham Arena. Unsurprisingly, places are selling like hot cakes at the moment – so book now if you want to guarantee your seat among the glitterati of the live music world and find out at first hand who scoops this year’s new-look Arthurs. Anyone who would rather spend their Saturday night being kicked around a freezing cold soccer pitch at the Match of the Year, however, should contact Peter Aiken as soon as possible. For some weird reason team places are normally at a premium…

Home-grown talent at the
Delegates Jam

Throughout the weekend the ILMC’s ‘Access All Areas’ scheme will offer free admission to gigs all over London as usual – but this year’s line-up is already shaping up to be a classic for our international talent spotters. Details will be announced at the conference weekend. Speaking of talent, Saturday and Sunday night’s delegates’ jam sessions look set to create even more musical mayhem than before, thanks to the combined support of Rock-It Cargo and American Talent Agency. With ‘bouncing ball karaoke’ and a full brass section rumoured to be joining the mix at various points, there’ll be no excuse for allowing your hidden talents to go undiscovered for yet another year...

While for some ‘Dr. Mercader’s End-of-Term Champagne Party’ will mark their tear-stained farewell to ILMC 18, for over 100 diehard members Sunday night’s main feature, the ’Arabian Nights’ Graduation Dinner, will be the final fling. Thanks to the support of Mirage Promotions and Gearhouse, this promises to be a truly ‘sheik’ affair – with an arak reception, live tabla band, hookah pipes, belly dancing competitions, the finest Middle Eastern eats this side of the Mediterranean, and even the ILMC’s legendary dancing camel assembled in a bedouin tent that will somehow be pitched 100 feet above Hyde Park. Only at the ILMC….

SCHOOL PRIZES

After years of under-achieving in the B-stream, last year saw the Arthur Awards pull their socks up, put on their best school uniform and realise their full potential at the top of the class. Not only is the ceremony now one of the most star-studded spectacles in the business’ over-stuffed schedule of back-slapping events, but our new voting procedure ensures that the results are a nail-bitingly accurate reflection of the entire industry’s views. As last year, a randomly selected panel of 30 secret jurors is being asked to draw up a list of nominations in each of our various categories. Those nominations will then be announced in the February issue of IQ magazine – which will also contain a voting form for all members to complete and return, irrespective of whether they are planning to be at the conference or not.

Serious stuff, eh? Almost like a real industry awards show, in fact…

WELCOME TO THE FACULTY

Swelling the ranks of over-stressed ILMC team members this year are new faces Robyn Bunting (Assistant Producer), Fiona Galloway (Events Manager), Michael Muldoon (Registration Assistant) and Hannes Theron (Accounts). We need all the help we can get, so try not to frighten them off too quickly. No drawing pins on the chairs or frogs in the desks, OK?

LAST CHANCE TO BE A PATRON

With half the industry having apparently decided that the conference is the place to spend their annual promotion budget, very few openings for advertising and sponsorship now remain at ILMC=18. To make sure that your company name fills one of the appetising vacancies and indelibly prints itself on the consciousness of the world’s major players, contact Chris Prosser now at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .
