The NME has published a report into carbon footprints in the touring industry using expert advice from www.carbonfootprint.com's John Buckley.

The magazine examined five different areas of the touring industry and concluded that 'stadium tours' such as the massive jaunt in 2007 by The Police were the worst offenders followed by 'round the world tours' with 'transit van tours' and 'the solo showman' coming in behind this.

The greenest tours being those where some thought has gone into touring - referred to by NME as the 'green giggers' such as Radiohead where, for example, buses replace planes for travel and equipment is shipped in advance by sea. But the biggest offender was seen to be travel by fans to stadiums rather than the shows themselves with Buckley saying "at the Live Earth concert in New Jersey the biggest contribution to carbon emissions wasn't from the concert itself, it was the fans ...The Police played lots of big stadiums, they need to be careful where they play and make sure its near public transport".
