A leaked report from the the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee in the UK has criticised online sales sites such as eBay that provide ticket touts with easy outlets to sell tickets and little protection for consumers from counterfiet tickets and other fraudulent activity.

A leaked report from the the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee in the UK has criticised online sales sites such as eBay that provide ticket touts with easy outlets to sell tickets and little protection for consumers from counterfiet tickets and other fraudulent activity.

MPs found that internet auction sites such as eBay were “colluding with ticket touts to obtain seats for top sports events and concerts which are then sold to fans at rip-off prices”. In the article, UK concert promoter Harvey Goldsmith called eBay “the biggest touts in the world” and pointed to the risk of using eBay as a conduit to touts and others selling tickets which may or may not be genuine. If the leaked report is to be believed, UK sports minister Gerry Sutcliffe may be considering drawing up a list of ‘protected events’ where touting would be banned to add to football tickets and tickets for the 2012 Olympics - but legislation banning touting is not expected to follow. What is likely is that MPs will put pressure will onto online websites to change their ticket sales practices. The effect of the new Resale Rights Society in regulating the concert ticket market has yet to be tested.
