Thom Yorke from Radiohead has said the band won't be playing Glastonbury this year because of the poor public transport links.
Speaking at a Friends of the Earth
press do Yorke said "one of the conditions of the band carrying on
touring is that we do everything we can to minimise our impact on the
environment. What we're trying to do now is only play in areas that
have a public transport infrastructure in place. So that rules out
Glastonbury for this year. Maybe we can work out a plan for the future.
They’re probably sick of the sight of us anyway."
However, a number of press commentators noted that Glastonbury
organised 22,500 coach tickets in 2007 and over 10,000 fans came by
train and shuttle bus and that the Fetsival promoted car sharing. The
team at AGreenerFestival added that whilst they could only support Radiohead's
action in reducing their touring footprint, the biggest environmental
impact of music events in terms of greenhouse gases was fan travel not
band travel.
